Your action needed on legislation that will negatively impact animal rescuers and infringe upon our constitutional rights. 3/7/08

On Monday, March 10th, the Connecticut Environment Committee will hear testimony from the public concerning HB 5827, "An Act Concerning Animal Shelters.

If passed, this harmful legislation would allow the Department of Agriculture to make warrantless inspections of any private home caring for ten or more rescued animals (of any species) over six months of age, at any time of day.

Further, HB 5827 provides no clarity regarding standards of animal care to which rescuers would have to adhere, or what could constitute a violation, leaving rescuers wide open to arbitrary and capricious decision-making by the Department of Agriculture.

Rescuers who fail to purchase the required license allowing the Department of Agriculture unimpeded access to their homes -- or who continue to rescue animals despite license suspension or revocation -- would be subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to a year in prison.

Animal rescuers provide solutions to Connecticut's companion animal needs. HB 5827 would treat rescuers, who work tirelessly to protect animals, like criminals.

I am training my 17 month old abby to "give me five"-using the clickertraining method..does anyone recommend any "healthly" treats for mycat -containing no grains, fillers, etc. I can use during our trainingsessions..

These Abys are so smart. Have you seen the 100% chicken treats? Whole Life PetTreatscome in other flavors too. We use the chicken for cats.

Liv-a-Littles(refrigerate afteropening) is another whole chicken treat. Google and see what you can find; theyareexpensive but worth it. Some kitties take a little while to like them. I hadto wet (justslightly) a small piece for one of my cats at first.My blue Aby gave me high fives all the time. No clicker was used. Have younoticed thatcats will raise one paw when they want something?

Whispurr did that a lot. So,one day Itouched the bottom of his foot then raised my hand and said, "High Five". Helearned toassociated my raised hand and maybe the words, for the raised paw. It tookabout twodays and he started raising his paw higher for the "High Five" than for "paw". We wouldtouch paws with the "High Five" command and he would get a treat.Now for some bragging. Of course, you knew that would happen. Whispurr alsodid situps, shake hands, and kissie kissies on command.

None of my Abys had a rapid heart rate. But one of my spay rescue kitties hadit. She wasmedicated for about a month then weaned off of it. She now gets a rapid heartrate onlywhen excited i.e. when I took her to see the vet at the rescue shelter. Fourdays later, I tookher to my regular vet and sat with her in a quiet room for about 20 minutes. They put her ona machine and her heart rate was normal. She is only 2 years.My 19-year-old Somali's heart rate is up, but we understand that.

Coat color: warm and glowing.
Ticking: distinct and even, with dark colored bands contrasting with lighter colored bands on the hair shafts. Undercoat color clear and bright to the skin. Deeper color shades desired, however intensity of ticking not to be sacrificed for depth of color. Darker shading along spine allowed if fully ticked. Prefernce given to cats UNMARKED on the undersides, chest,and legs, tail without rings.
Facial Markings: dark lines extending from eyes and brows, cheekbone shading, dots and shading on whisker pads are all desirable enhancements. Eyes accentuated by fine dark line, encircled by light colored area.
Eye color: gold or green, the more richness and depth of color the better.

Ruddy - Coat ruddy brow, ticked with various shades of darker brown or black, the extrem outer tip to be the darkest, with orange-brown undercoat. Tail tipped with black. The uderside and inside of legs to be a tint to harmonize with the main color. Nose leather: tile red. Paw pads: black or brown, with black between toes, extending slighty beyond the paws.

Red - Coat rich, warm glowing red, ticked with chocolate-brown, the extreme outer tip to be dark, with red undercoat. Tai tipped with slate blue. The underside and inside of legs to be a tint to harmonize with the main color. Nose leather: old rose. Paw pads: mauve, with slate blue between toes, extending slightly beyond the paws.

Blue - Coat warm beige, ticked with various shades of slate blue, the extreme outer tip to be the darkest, with blush beige undercoat. Tail tipped with slate blue. The undrside and inside of legs to be a tint to harmonize with the main color. Nose leather: old rose. Paw pads: mauve, with slate blue between toes, extending slightly beyond the paws.

Fawn - Coat warm rose-beige, ticked with light cocoa brown, the extreme outer tip to be the darkest, with blush beige undercoat. Tail tipped with light cocoa brown. The underside and inside of legs to be a tint to harmonize with the main color. Nose leather: salmon. Paw pads: pink with light cocoa brown between the toes,extending slightly beyond the paws.
